Get Involved and MAKE KONY FAMOUS!

I was tucked away in bed getting ready to fall asleep when something in my head said, “Look over your news feed one more time.” I grabbed my phone, hit Facebook and scrolled through updates when I saw a friend post something about “KONY”. Unfamiliar with it, I decided to click on it and find out what the late night fuss was about when I was directed to a 30 minute video titled “KONY 2012” (below). God knows at 1:30 in the morning I had no plans to watch a 30 minute video on my phone but I gave it a chance. Unsure of the point of the film, I waited and waited and then like a ton of bricks I got the message loud and clear:

MAKE KONY FAMOUS!

The Background.
In the 30 minute film, you’re given access to activism at its finest. Director Jason Russell (right) introduces you to the unthinkable 26 year-long crime in Uganda carried out by Joseph Kony (above) and his rebel group the Lord Resistance Army (L.R.A.). Under Kony’s dictatorship, the army has kidnapped and brainwashed over 30,000 children, turning girls into sex slaves and boys into child soldiers who are forced to mutilate people’s faces and kill their own parents. Kony’s violent impact to the people of Uganda has been so severe that he is currently #1 on the International Criminal Court list of the world’s worst criminals based on the severity of his crimes. To bring it all home, Jason shows his friendship with a Ugandan teen named Jacob and the detrimental impact the L.R.A has had on his life. Jason promises to find a way to bring down Kony. That promise developed into an organization which Jason co-founded called Invisible Children and global movement known as KONY 2012.

The Dilemma.
If more people in the world vocalized their desire to have Kony stopped, he would have been arrested by now. Even though the U.S. government is aware of Kony, they’ve remained at a distance to some degree since “our national security or interest is not at stake”. But human life is at stake. Think about this happening to your little siblings, cousins, children, or even you pet being abducted and placed in the same conditions as these kids. When the roles are switched and the scenario affects you, it becomes a problem. Jason explains it effortlessly by saying, “Where you live shouldn’t determine whether you live”. No longer waiting on the government, Individual Children and its supporters have made great strides to advance and protect Ugandan communities by building schools, creating jobs, and installing radio networks to update them in preparation for an attack. But it hasn’t been enough because Kony is remains and can still abduct children and kill innocent people. The only way to send troops into Uganda with the technology and equipment necessary to find and arrest Kony we must show that we want him to be stopped.

The Deal.
The only way to send troops to Uganda is to spread the word by joining the KONY 2012 global movement. I am beyond awestruck by this movement. With ‘life’ as the motivator of the campaign, KONY 2012 is a perfectly crafted global marketing campaign that some of the biggest brands couldn’t design let alone receive such engagement for people. It’s marketing and advertising that weaves into viral, grassroots, guerrilla, experiential, word of mouth, promotion, mobile, print, sales, non-profit, and interactive avenues. Invisible Children has hit it on the head in every medium and it is possibly the best of its kind. In its totality, this campaign has created a movement that has the potential to define a generation, end injustice, and rehabilitate lives.

Your Part.
In order to arrest Kony, you must show that you want him arrested by voicing your opinion. What makes this unique is that Invisible Children is asking you to make Kony famous in order to bring him down. While Invisible Children is targeting culture and policy makers like musicians, celebrities, and political figures to bring him down you can spread the word to your friends. In the hyper social media world that we live in today, you are an update, tweet, and hash tag away from getting the Kony message out to more people.  Even better is that you can spread the movement everywhere you go by purchasing posters ($5, above) or the Kony 2012 Action Kit ($30) through the Invisible Children Store. The kit includes posters, stickers, buttons, a t-shirt and a Kony bracelet(left). All the work executed by the organization, myself, and of course you will come together one night in April.

Cover the Night Event.
On Friday April 20th, 2012 Invisible Children wants everyone to blanket every street in every city at sundown in the Cover the Night Event (below). As the world goes to sleep, supporters will stay out throughout the night covering their city with Kony paraphernalia so the world wakes up to their city standing up for a cause. This movement plans to create a flash mob, but realistically a flash mob is what you see in Times Square when Gap wants to show off their work out pants via dance. Instead I like to think of what the Invisible Children plan to do as a Blazing Horde!!! It will use as many people as possible to demand attention, action, justice all to make Kony famous.

Do It.
Kony must be made known worldwide and every blog post, status update, tweet, or conversation helps. If you can voice your opinion about your political beliefs or take a picture of your dinner, then you most certainly can devote your voice to make Kony famous.

Watch the film, become a part of the movement, and spread the word. I know I have and I will!

Growing Pains: When Reading Trumps Shopping

Today, I realized that something really strange has happened to me. I don’t know when it initially began, but I do know that I caught wind of it today. It went something like this: I parked my car, walked down the street of busy shoppers and retail stores, walked into Barnes and Noble, stayed an hour, bought a book, walked to my car, and drove back home. For many this is an ordinary trip to B&N, but let me insert the part I didn’t mention. After getting out of the car I easily walked past H&M, Forever 21, Apple, Dots Cupcakes, and multiple stores that once secured my attention. And this was third to B&N since the month started. It was once I got home that I realized I had overlooked my favorite pastime of shopping to go to the bookstore. With a confused look on my face I thought, “What the hell just happened?”

I decided to take a look at my room and saw a major shift from how I used to be to today. I now have more books that I voluntarily purchased (right) than shoes to wear to the club. My magazine stacks of 944 and Cosmopolitan have been replaced with Success and Advertising Age. My DVR is full of National Geographic documentaries and interviews instead of episodes of Project Runway and The Game. And instead of chatting with friends I’m highlighting points in books more than ever before. There’s been a drastic change in the type of information I take in and I don’t know why I wasn’t I informed earlier. My only conclusion to the change is that I am no longer interested in the novelties of what was once my every day and that I’m devoting more time to teach myself new things. Not a bad thing at all, but when you understand that I used to spend all my free time at the mall to now spending all my free time at Barnes & Noble it does kind of come as a shock.

While I do love this unexpected hobby of mine, I can’t help but wonder if I’m getting old or if I’m finally making better use my brain. More importantly, has this happened to you? If so, did it come as a major shock for you as well? Deep down, I don’t see this slowing down so I pray it’s simply a sign that I’m thinking more and challenging things rigorously. However, if it’s really stage one of getting old, then I might as well invest in a rocking chair, bifocals, and a couple of cats. Hopefully it’s not because I really don’t like cats.

Oreo Shares it 100th Birthday with You!

Today marks the 100th birthday of Oreo cookies. That’s 100 years of twisting, licking, dunking, and chowing down on Nabisco’s tuxedo style sandwich cookie. To bring in the big day in a big way, Oreo is encouraging the world to make their life a little less serious and “celebrate the kid inside” of them. To do so, Oreo is creating exciting moments around the world through large scale events. Oreo events include a flash mob with a performance by Lady Antebellum at The Grove in LA, fireworks at China’s Shanghai Bund, an Oreo inspired playground in Indonesia, a piñata party in Venezuela, and so much more. If you’re unable to make it to one of the events, you can still participate online. Over the net, Oreo is letting you send a bag of cookies to someone you love, share your own Oreo photos, play in the Oreo Arcade, and so much more. To keep along with the tagline, you can even go to Oreo’s Facebook page and share your own story about how you let your inner child shine. It’s a big birthday for the cookie and having events both live and online is a great year to get the celebration in swing!

HAPPY ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY SALMON LIKE THE FISH!!!

March 1st, 2011 I started this blog and a year later there’s 128 posts, 200+ Facebook followers, a multitude of comments, so many retweets, and a million thanks I need to give to you all who’ve supported. To do so, I give you my very first vlog saying thank you for being so supportive and amazing! You all rock!!!

Fat Fat Attack: Hook Burger

I recently asked my Facebook followers the question if you had one thing to eat for the rest of your life what you would chose. If you thought like me, the assumption would be responses like “pizza” or “filet mignon”. Instead, my awesome followers said good old “salmon”…eh, and a chameleon too. While they’ll live on fish and reptiles, if I had the choice it would be cheeseburgers—and maybe a Hook Burger.

My friend Ajay and I caught wind of a new burger joint and I really dig it. Hook Burger, founded by Brent and Bruce Reichard, is the sister restaurant to The Habit. The difference between The Habit and Hook Burger is that Hook Burger is a bistro inspired restaurant with quick casual dining prices. Their tag, “fine dining in a bun” hits it right on the head. The food oozes of quality, freshness, and pure delicousness (yeah I made that up) and it’s all at a reasonable price. If you think the restaurant sells only beef burgers and fries think again. You can get chicken sandwiches, tuna melts, salad, coleslaw, onion rings, beer, and wine. I got the Prime Burger with sweet potato fires (right). It was so good, juicy, full of flavor, and the fries were amazing! I absolutely loved it. Plus the employees are so cool and nice it doesn’t feel like you’re in restaurant. Even better is that the atmosphere of the spot has an open and relaxing vibe that you don’t feel the need to leave immediately when you finish. Currently they have locations in Oxnard and Burbank, and are opening a spot in Pasadena. If you have the chance to go to the bistro, I highly recommend it. The food is good, the staff is great, and the setup is perfect especially with summer coming up. If you haven’t done so already try it out for yourself, you just might get hooked!

Sprinkles Cupcakes Brings You Ice Cream and 24-Hour Dessert!

If you ever want to see a smile on my face, give me dessert. Want to see me look like the Cheshire cat then give me a big cupcake—red velvet to be exact. I was first introduced to distinctively delicious cupcakes when my friend Leticia took me to Sprinkles Cupcakes in Beverly Hills, CA. Since its start back in 2003, Sprinkles has become a national phenomenon thanks in part to great publicity. With support from celebs like Tyra Banks, Katie Holmes, Barbara Streisand, and being featured in major publications the brand has popped up everywhere and has become the leader in the cupcake craze. Minus about 1 inch of too much frosting the cupcakes are great. Add atop of that a cute and open store environment and you’re set. So when I saw the news about the company developing a convenient purchasing machine and expanding its product line to include ice cream I felt like I hit the jackpot!

Next door to its Beverly Hills location, Sprinkles is introducing the 24-Hour Sprinkles. The brightly colored ATM style machine (right) will dispense cupcake mixes, cupcakes, and apparel to anyone itching for that quick sugar fix at any time of the day. The unique invention is a great way to give people what they want and allow them to avoid the long, yet worthwhile, wait. Directly next to 24-Hour Sprinkles, Sprinkles Ice Cream (below) will sell hand-crafted ice cream alongside waffle cones, sundaes, homemade toppings, and freshly baked cookies. While the debut date hasn’t been announced yet, I can image the stores will be up and running just in time for summer. The addition of the dispensary and creamery next to the original Sprinkles makes it quite possibly the tastiest block in the 90210.

Mad Men Season 5 Poster Revealed!

The Emmy and Golden Globe award winning dramatic series Mad Men is back with its fifth season this March 25. The 1960s based show on AMC starring Don Draper (John Hamm) takes you deeper into the Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce advertising agency and all the shenanigans around the company and its employees. While Draftfcb’s “Falling Man” campaign of outdoor and print ads have been around mimicking the opening credits, the new poster was revealed this morning on Mad Men’s Twitter page. Pulling in Draper himself, the new poster combines the show’s “style, debauchery, deception, adultery, and jealousy” in one clean shot. With print and TV promos released, the ads aim to entice viewers to tune in for the 2-hour premiere. It’s working on me and I’m definitely going to watch, but what do you think about the ads?
